I chose to write about “The Book Stops Here,” by Daniel H. Pink because I found the overall tone of the article to be interesting and entertaining, while still being informative and filled with important comparative facts between the encyclopedia format of Wikipedia.org and more classically formatted texts.  Also, I enjoyed the way the article opened with the story of Einar Kvaran and his relationship with the website.

Pinks main argument is that though Wikipedia.org is able to be edited by anyone, with or without a degree or publishing credentials, the site’s format is the future of encyclopedias and is still one of the best research sources available.  As college students and educators it is important to understand the information sources we are able to utilize in furthering our education, with Wikipedia.org being  one of the most widely used starting points for many student assignments.

One of the most convincing points of the article is Pink’s transition from the “One Smart Guy”, to the “One Best  Way”, to the “One for All” styles of encyclopedias.  Pink references recognizable names like Pliny the Elder, Encyclopedia Brittanica to illustrate the evolution of encyclopedias and to convince his readers of the evolution towards wiki-style sites.

One of the major concerns with this style of encyclopedia is the fact that anyone can alter the integrity of legitimate articles, and create their own based on little or no true facts.  These people are called ‘trolls’ or ‘vandals’ and periodically delete or vandalize articles with obscenities.  However, Wikipedia.org is not completely defenseless against these attacks.  With over 100,000 contributing authors and with the ability of founder Jimmy Wales to block users or lock articles, the site is a lot more secure and accurate than many critics believe it to be.  As Pink writes, “librarians, teachers and academics don’t perceive it as credible, because it has no formal review process.”  In the future Wales plans to address this by adding a separate site with locked articles and referenced authors, in addition to the Wikipedia.org as we know it.

Kruger uses many different ways to get his point across, by examples about Hilary and Obama. He always talks about how facebook was used during the elections to help get voters to be more conserned about the politics. This i have seen many of times i have been asked to join a fb group about politics.

Before reading this article i didn’t really stop to think about how much the web does influence the youth about poltics becasue we see so much of it being poped up in front of us while on the interent. But how do we really know what is true information opposed to false?

One type of stragerty i can use that Wallace used for my subcultures paper would be the historical information an the background information on Body Peircing. I can use this information for the auidence to understand where they have orginated from an what they were used an meant for. I can also use my own personal experiences of body piercings since i feel that i belong to this subculture. I can also use my friends who belong to this subculture as well and their personal expeirences to help my audience get a full rounded unerstanding of this group of people.

Other types of  approaches that other people used that i did not use until the third draft was putting my own personal experiences into my paper. i think that once i finally started to understand what was being asked of me for the paper; the paper started to flow better and i was able to make the paper more detailed. Another strategy that  i saw other classmates use that i found useful was by sectioning off different paragraphs. each paragraph was a different theme for the paper.

This is not the first time i have written multiple drafts for a paper. I find that writing multiple drafts is very useful because it allows you to have it criticed and then being able to go back and edit it allows you to change what needs to be fixed. I know that my grammar, theme, an form sometimes do not allows work together so by having the option of revising that drafts multiple times allows me an oppurtuinty to fix it.

Being apart of a sorority and apart of Greek life makes the friends that i have share a different type of friendship, a special bond that only we understand. When you decide to pledge a sorority you dedicate a good amount of time and you commit your life to your pledge sisters. You may all be different people when entering into pledging but as the process continues you become one with your fellow pledge sisters. You still have your own unique traits and characteristics that make you who you are but after its over you all fall into the subculture of a sorority girl. My sisters and I are very committed to  the traditions that have been around for over hundreds of years, and we uphold these traditions and customs and no one ever questions why something was done a certain way or if a problem arises they are always resolved in a certain manner. This is also true for Greek Life; the other fraternity’s and sororities have tradtions that are kept and upheld so that future members towards their organizations know how to actively work in their organizations.

Another subculture i belong to would be being Itailian, by being itailian we have certain traditions that need to upheld as well. Every Sunday without a choice my family goes to church and then we have to be at my parents house at one o’clock for dinner and we are not allowed to leave and go back to our others homes until later that evening. We always have sunday meals together along with all holidays. I know from first hand experience that this is a very common tradition amoung Italian families. I have many Italain friends that have the same tradition.
